What is the difference between a regulatory body and a professional association?

Role of the College

The College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists – Newfoundland and Labrador (CASLP-NL) functions in union with the Newfoundland and Labrador Council of Health Professionals (NLCHP) in regulating the practice of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology in this province.

The public is served and protected by the College by:

  • Approving a program of study and education for the purpose of establishing education requirements
  • Developing entry to practice requirements for Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists including annual renewal or re-certification requirements and continuing competency requirements
  • Establishing a scope of practice
  • Establishing standards of practice
  • Developing a code of ethics

It is not a teaching institution. It is a professional, self-regulating body with the primary focus of serving and protecting the public interest.

The Chair of the College and one other elected member of the College represent the College as members of the NLCHP and assist the Council in carrying out its duties under the Health Professions Act.

Role of the Association

The Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (NLASLPA) acts to advocate for the professions of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and the populations they serve in this province. Membership in the Association is voluntary.

The professions are served by the Association by:

  • Advocating and promoting the professions of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology

  • Advocating for the populations served by Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists in this province

  • Providing continuing professional development opportunities for members

  • Fostering a culture of inclusion, not only for those who seek services, but for Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists across the province

It is not a regulatory body. It is a professional association with the primary focus of advocating for the professions of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.

The President and other executive members of NLASLPA are elected by and accountable to the membership of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists.
